The Mirror

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Cor. 3:18).”

“Mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all” so goes the line from the Brothers Grimm story, Snow White. What do you see when you look in a mirror? You may retort, “Me, myself, and I silly with all my flaws and defects.” Mirrors do more than reflect the outside of a person they bring up within us how we feel about ourselves.

We can look at the wrong people to tell us who we are. There are mirrors in the world that lie. If you compare yourself with the latest pop star or youngest billionaire you may come away thinking you are next to nothing. Are there people in your life who make you feel less than or insecure or even “stupid”? When you have to check in with these people to see how you are “measuring up” they become the mirrors by which you define yourself.

Unlike the “magic mirror on the wall” there is a mirror of the heart to tell you who you are. You and I are made in the image of God. Sin will distort that truth and will reduce us to ugliness, hating others and ourselves. God sent his son Jesus into the world to tell us who we are and to show us what we can become. He is the only one who can tell you who you really are. Jesus will not lie to you, and in his light, you will have light. You will discover the beauty of your soul and the eternal path he wants you to follow. Our vision and worth will become real to us when we look to Jesus for in him is pure love and forgiveness.

Psalms 27:4 portrays the heart of David who was an imperfect human being and yet one the Lord described as a man after his own heart. His prayer was, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” Make that your prayer, and you will become like Him, the One you worship.
