The “Eyes” Have It

As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart (Proverbs 27:19).

The sixteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is ayin. In its ancient form, the letter looks very similar to an eye. The word Ayin means eye, to see, metaphorically speaking how we understand or view things in our life. The proverbial phrase “Is the glass half empty or half full” would apply here.

The word Ayin also means a well, fountain or spring. Scripture likens our heart to a wellspring. If we guard it against the bitterness of sin what flows out of it will be life-giving. If our heart is pure, we see things from a wholesome perspective. Our faith and trust in the Lord will see us through any adversity or trial. We can see how even bad things that happen in life can have a silver lining. If our heart is impure, we have a poor outlook on life and see or understand things from a “bad eye.” We tend to complain, magnifying what we do not like, and blind to the blessings of our life.

The way your life is turning out has a direct correlation to your heart condition. And your heart condition is tied to the way you see life. Gracious words can disguise hatred in your heart, but there is no cover up for a life misspent. Be honest with yourself by getting to the heart of the matter. Call upon the Lord to help you change the way you think and act. Your eyes will open to a life worth living.
