Bite Your Tongue or Speak Your Mind

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1KJV).

Ecclesiastes 3 begins with the subject of time and seasons. Timing may not be everything, but it is vital in living a life that matters. Verse 7 of that chapter admonishes the reader that there is a time to keep silent and a time to speak. To speak or not to speak that is the question.

Scripture makes it clear that our words are important and they can bless as well as curse. Apostle James cautions us to be quick to listen and slow to speak while Proverbs warns that in the midst of many words there is sin. If you talk less, you will sin less. If you listen more, though you’re a fool, people will think you’re wise.

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossian believers commanded their speech to be always gracious, seasoned with salt when answering questions put to them. Words can pack a punch if grace is at the core of it.

If you have close relationships with people around you, who listen to and heed what you say the times of your silence speak volumes. Talk is cheap but a word in due season is worth more than gold.
