The Root Determines the Fruit

You are my friends if you do what I command.... I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command:

Love each other.

John 15:14-17 (NLT)

Someone once said, “Life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes!” Life is like a vapor. We begin a month, and before long, we are already in the next one. Whoever said, “time flies when you are having fun” only got it half right. It flies, period, so we better make our days count by knowing why we are here and what our purpose is.

God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and to multiply. Jesus told His disciples, “I chose you to go and produce fruit that lasts.” You and I are fruit trees. We are here to bring glory to God by the fruit we bear. Stop wondering about your destiny and the will of God for your life; instead, start living it through Him. When your roots go deep in the love of Christ, you can’t help but bear sweet fruit that remains. He is our source, and we can do nothing without Him.

The root of a tree determines its fruit. Abandon your notions about your family tree and root yourself in the Tree of Life. We must die to the flesh that we may live in Christ. The roots of past generations have a way of showing up on today’s calendar. Don’t take pride in your bloodline, for only the blood of Christ can save you. Where is your root system? May your roots grow deep in the fertile ground of God’s extravagant love!
